Children with disabilities have special needs. Ottobock has set itself the task of making their everyday lives easier. Learn here how our wheelchairs and rehabilitation devices for children contribute to this.
Wheelchairs for children differ considerably from those for adults in terms of their design and equipment. They promote the independence of the children and relieve the caregivers. Read here about the differences, which wheelchairs Ottobock has for children and the various accessory options available.
How do children’s wheelchairs differ from adult models?
Because children have completely different needs from adults, Ottobock wheelchairs and rehab buggies are tailored especially to them. The devices for children are designed to grow with the child, are individually adaptable and suitable for a wide variety of life situations. They are intended to help develop the motor skills of children with disabilities. A children’s wheelchair also takes into account the special anatomy of the little ones. Depending on age, body proportions change until growth is complete.
Children’s wheelchairs are generally lighter and more delicate than adult models. The frame geometry at the front is designed to allow children to stand fully on the foot plate as far as possible, so they can complete the transfer from and into the wheelchair more effectively and independently. There are also no pipes in the way, so your child can drive as close as possible to the table, for example for painting or eating.

Children may not always have adult awareness or caution, therefore children’s wheelchairs often have additional safety features such as straps or padding. Using the various supports, the technician adjusts the wheelchair to the needs, indication and height of the child. While adult wheelchairs are often geared exclusively to functionality and durability, Ottobock also attaches great importance to age-appropriate design of models for children. They are available in lighter colours and with colourful spoke protectors to make them more attractive to children. They need to feel comfortable in their wheelchair and move about with self-confidence.

What wheelchairs for children and adolescents does Ottobock offer?
Ottobock wheelchairs and rehab buggies for children are just as unique as every child. Our two product lines offer the appropriate medical device for every need.
kidevo range
"I’m a speedy little mouse", says Nomine about herself as she whizzes across the meadows in her wheelchair. Each wheelchair in the kidevo range is specially adapted by an expert to the child in question and continues to develop with it. Both the seat and back components are custom-made. Numerous options are available designed especially for children, including steering assists, various brake combinations and positioning aids such as pads. The adjustable centre of gravity ensures optimal rolling characteristics and supports independent mobility right from the start.
The kidevo family consists of three product lines: the kidevo mini wheelchairs for toddlers, the kidevo prime wheelchairs for older children, and the kidevo adapt, a mobility base for a seating shell. The mini and prime variants differ in size and functionality. All kidevo models are rigid-frame wheelchairs and are available with a tilt function. This function makes it possible to tilt the seat area of the wheelchair to different angles, for example to relieve pressure or improve the posture.
Kimba line
“Emilia sits in the Kimba seat as if it were a throne and feels right at home,” says Emilia’s father Andreas.
Ottobock developed and tested all products in the Kimba line in cooperation with doctors*, therapists and users in order to meet the special requirements placed on rehab buggy. The product range includes five seating mobility bases and a multifunctional seating unit. This unit can be mounted on any mobility base without the use of tools. As a result, Kimba products offer the appropriate solution for any everyday situation. Just like the kidevo wheelchairs, they have a tilt function for changing sitting positions and an adjustable back support. While the kidevo series was designed especially for toddlers, the Kimba models are already suitable for infants.

Kimba Cross – outdoor fun for the whole family
Bike rides are also possible: The Kimba Cross can be quickly and easily converted into a bicycle trailer. This allows your child to stay in their accustomed seating unit and enjoy the outing with you. Simple folding mechanisms make it easier to transport the device.
Most Kimba mobility bases are foldable. They also offer storage space for required equipment or shopping. The suspension ensures a smooth ride, even on rough terrain.

Power wheelchairs for children and adolescents
In addition to manual wheelchairs, Ottobock also offers power wheelchairs for children. The Juvo B5 Teen helps children and adolescents master their everyday lives. Thanks to its simple adjustment mechanisms, it takes into account their special proportions as they grow, among other things. The power wheelchair is available in front, mid-wheel and rear-wheel drive. This means that, depending on the variant, it adapts perfectly to the driving characteristics and various surfaces both indoors and outdoors. The integrated lift seat of the Juvo B5 is particularly important for many users, as it makes it possible to open windows or reach higher shelves, for example.
