Vickson's C-Leg Story.
Market researcher gains a newfound independence with Ottobock’s C-Leg.
Vickson, a 34-year-old market researcher from South London, has experienced a profound transformation in his life thanks to Ottobock's C-Leg. His journey from struggling with mobility to gaining newfound independence is both inspiring and a testament to the advancements in prosthetic technology.
Vickson's story begins at the age of 14 when he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. The aggressive nature of the disease led to the amputation of his right leg at the hip. Growing up in Italy, Vickson faced numerous challenges adapting to life with a mechanical knee. For two decades, he relied heavily on crutches due to the instability of his prosthetic limb, especially in wet conditions. Falling frequently became a part of his daily struggle, making even the simplest tasks daunting.
Vickson moved to the UK in 2012 and in February 2024, his life took a dramatic turn when he was introduced to the C-Leg via the NHS MPK Policy This policy is designed so that anyone who meets the criteria, above or through knee amputees, can access a microprocessor knee through NHS funding. During the process, Vickson had a brief trial with the Kenevo MPK, a prosthetic designed for less active users. While the Kenevo provided unparalleled stability, it wasn't suited for Vickson's active lifestyle. Transitioning to the C-Leg, however, marked the beginning of a new chapter.
The C-Leg has changed everything for me, I can't even describe how much my life has improved. After 20 years of using two crutches, I now feel secure enough to use just one crutch outdoors, and none at all when I'm at home."
One of the most significant changes for Vickson has been the ability to use an umbrella. "It might sound small but having a free hand to pick up my glasses, keys, or show my ticket on the bus and train is massive for me," he says. The C-Leg has given him the confidence to navigate the city and his workplace with greater ease. The C-Leg’s Stumble Recovery feature is always active throughout the entire swing phase, which means if a stumble was to occur the knee is always ready to support him and prevent a fall from happening. At work, a steep ramp used to be a major hurdle, but now, due to the stance flexion resistance function of the C-Leg, he is able to descend the ramp safely, allowing him to walk without holding onto the railing.
Vickson is not just content with the mobility the C-Leg offers; he is inspired to improve his overall fitness. "Before getting the C-Leg, I didn't care much about being fit and healthy because my mechanical leg held me back. Now, I feel like I can achieve much more if I get fitter."
His newfound independence has also encouraged him to explore new activities. Vickson has tried puppy yoga and plays wheelchair basketball and is currently in a team competing in division 1. He is focused on building up his physical health, aiming to see significant improvements in the next six months.
The C-Leg has given me a new lease on life. I feel like a new person. It has enabled me to love myself more, and now I look forward to all the new experiences I can try.”
Vickson hopes his story will inspire others facing similar challenges. "I want others to know the massive impact this technology has had on me. It has given me back some of the independence I lost at 14, and I never thought I'd be able to walk without crutches."
His journey with the C-Leg highlights not just the physical benefits, but also the emotional and psychological empowerment that comes with increased mobility. Vickson's story is a powerful reminder of how innovative prosthetics can transform lives, enabling individuals to reclaim their independence and pursue their goals with renewed vigour.
