About Us
For over 100 years, our mission has been to restore and improve independence for people with mobility challenges. We take pride in the quality and advanced technology that are reflected in our product lines. The people who work for us believe in our mission – taking it as a personal commitment to help make a difference for people who depend on one of our medical products to be more active.
Our History
Ottobock was founded in Germany in 1919 by Otto Bock, a prosthetist. In the early 20th century, Otto Bock transformed the way prosthetic limbs were made. Instead of carving wood to fit a patient, he applied manufacturing techniques and created separate components (like knees and feet) that could be combined, altered or customized to create a limb that was still unique to each patient – but wasn’t built from scratch.
His vision of restoring mobility lives on today, growing to serve the world with more than 340 patient care centers, 4 research hubs and 60 locations worldwide.
The company is headquartered in Duderstadt, Germany, and has more than 8,000 employees.
Ottobock Asia Pacific
With emergence of developing markets and China becoming a key player on both the commercial and political arena, the decision to lay foundations was taken in the mid 1990’s to establish and setup 100% owned subsidiaries of Ottobock. Today, Ottobock has 10 subsidiaries in Asia-Pacific, that are responsible for more than 20 countries in Asia Pacific. To accelerate the integration of products into the respective markets, Ottobock took the decision to establish Patient Care centres in those countries where current services were limited or where increased demand was required. Ottobock Asia Pacific has an office in Hong Kong that is responsible for Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan & the Philippines. With the exception of Macau which is in such close proximity to Hong Kong, we have established offices in the main cities.
Today Ottobock is well supported in these markets and continues to strive to meet the demands of the respective countries and furthermore continues in seeking opportunities to establish further roots in those markets which still do not command the presence required. In doing so, local needs, situations and aspirations are all taken into account to bring about an optimal solution for our customers and end users.
Finally, Ottobock continues to give back to the community, supporting various charities and projects that are consistent with our mission of restoring independence.
