Even after a forearm amputation or with a congenital malformation, a mental image of the hand usually remains mapped in the brain. Amputees can still imagine closing, opening or rotating their hand. This activates the remaining muscles in the residual limb.
These muscle signals are transformed into myoelectric signals using electrodes on the forearm and translated directly into a movement of the prosthetic hand. Myo Plus learns to interpret the user’s individual movement patterns, assigning each to a specific prosthesis movement. These patterns can be adapted with the Myo Plus app.
This intuitive control enables users to fully utilise the potential of their highly complex, multi-articulating prosthetic hands. Myo Plus pattern recognition is optimised for the bebionic hand and the MyoBock system.

Wolfgang is a farmer in Germany who lost his right hand in an accident at work. The idea of not wearing a prosthesis was out of the question. Wolfgang therefore uses Myo Plus pattern recognition and switches between his bebionic hand, the VariPlus Speed hand or the System Electric Greifer depending on the situation.

At 17, Lina had her right hand and parts of her forearm amputated as a result of a tumour. At first she was shocked, but thanks to the early care she received from her orthopaedic technician, she quickly regained her courage.

Even after an amputation, mental control of the hand remains mapped in the brain. Amputees can often still imagine closing their hand or rotating it. The corresponding nerve signals continue to be sent as well. The only thing missing is the corresponding organ for implementing the commands.
Myo Plus prosthesis control uses electrodes to measure the incoming signals on the forearm, deriving patterns from them that are characteristic for individual movements. Complex mathematical algorithms transform and amplify these signals so a prosthesis can translate them into the corresponding movement.

No, the use of Myo Plus prosthesis control is currently limited to prosthetic fittings of the forearm. However, research and development are being carried out in this area.

I have an upper arm amputation. Can I be fitted with Myo Plus pattern recognition as well?

The battery capacity depends on the individual usage profile for the prosthesis to a large extent. There are several battery options with different installed sizes and capacities.

How long does the battery last with Myo Plus pattern recognition?

It is not possible to make any general statements regarding this. However, the amount of training required to confidently use a myoelectric hand prosthesis can be compared with learning to play a musical instrument.
After a few hours, it is usually possible to open and close the prosthetic hand. Beyond that, successful integration at work and in everyday life requires regular use. It usually takes around three to six months for most users to integrate the prosthesis into their daily lives.

How long does it take to learn how to use Myo Plus prosthesis control?

The full potential of Myo Plus is realised in conjunction with the MyoBock terminal devices, and especially with the bebionic hand. However, the bebionic hand is not ideal for all activities at work and in everyday life. That is why Myo Plus control is also compatible with other MyoBock terminal devices, such as the VariPlus Speed hand and System Electric Greifer.
This allows users to choose a solution that is optimally adapted to their activities.

What terminal devices are compatible with Myo Plus control?

A process known as phantom hand sensation is individual for every individual user. In order to reliably generate trained movement patterns, mental training should be started, especially after an amputation.

Can I improve the mental image of the missing hand?

The Myo Plus app visualises the movement patterns and various control device settings. It is freely available in the iOS and Android Store and can be used on common mobile devices.

What do I need the Myo Plus app for?

Where can I find the PIN code for the Bluetooth connection to the Myo Plus app?

Movements carried out by myoelectric prostheses are generated by muscle activity in the residual limb. Unlike a conventional two-channel control device, Myo Plus uses the individual muscle activity (known as movement patterns) that occurs in the residual forearm during different hand movements. Myo Plus learns these movement patterns through a recording process via an app. A certain prosthetic hand grip can be assigned to each learned pattern. The control device thus first learns from the user.

After an amputation, there is still a certain imagination of the hand - also called phantom hand. The movements that can be performed mentally are called phantom hand movements.
