What is the Running Clinic?

At Ottobock, we want to give people with limited mobility the opportunity to experience our passion for sports. That’s why we initiated our Running Clinics in collaboration with Heinrich Popow, a Paralympic gold medalist at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 games. At our clinics, amputees come together for a weekend to train, practice, and try out sports prostheses under expert supervision.

Quality for life and independence

Heinrich Popow’s curriculum has been inspiring amputees from around the world since 2013. During Running Clinic sport camps, Ottobock coaches show prosthetic device users how to run with a sports prosthesis. Heinrich’s philosophy is rooted in the idea that people with disabilities should engage in sport regularly – not despite their disabilities, but because of them.

What to expect

When: July 19 - 21, 2024

Where: Prince George Sports & Learning Complex
8001 Sheriff Rd Landover, MD 20785

Under the direction and support of Ottobock coaches, participants will learn or hone their mobility and running skills over a 2-day period. This Running Clinic is part of our worldwide series and will be supported by Certified Prosthetist Orthotists with Ottobock sports prostheses provided to all participants for the duration of the clinic.

A weekend dedicated to fun and movement

It all starts on Friday afternoon -- lower limb amputees interested in sports meet up to spend the weekend testing out sports prostheses or to improve their running technique on their own equipment. The feel for running will be there faster than you think, and it’s not uncommon to hear comments like “I don’t want to take off my sports prosthesis” or “I’ve missed running so much”.

Things kick off on Friday with a get-to-know-you session, followed by the fitting of our sports prostheses for those who require it. Training begins on Saturday under the guidance of Paralympic Champion Heinrich Popow, who will demonstrate exercises and give you helpful tips in wearing a sports prosthesis. We’ll end the day with a group dinner with a chance for everyone to hang out with one another.

On Sunday, we’ll finish off the clinic with some specialized training for long-distance running -- culminating in a fun competition at the end!
